Redesigning a room can be an exciting yet daunting experience—there is so much planning and budgeting that goes into it! It is very tempting to choose cheaper options to lower the overall price tag, but remember that you rarely redesign rooms, making it advisable to splurge a little bit and make sure you’re making the right choices.
1. Safety
Probably the most important thing to not skimp on is safety features. Having adequate support beams, earthquake precautions, insurance, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and efficient exit routes. In the moment, it may seem okay to buy the cheaper option, but you do not want to be regretting that decision in the time of an emergency.
2. Lighting
Lighting is one of those things that you use every day and for most of the day! While natural lighting is, of course, the ideal choice, you can’t fully count on that because stormy days can take it away in a heartbeat. Avoid obnoxious buzzing noises with quality bulbs and feel better about your impact on the earth with ones that are eco-friendly, even if they’re a couple of dollars more. Having enough lighting is also important, as dim lighting can cause eye strain and grumpy moods. You know what they say, a well-lit home is a happy home!

3. Appliances
Narrow down the most important appliances for your lifestyle and invest highly in those. These should be appliances you’ll be using often and that make your daily life easier. Refrigerators, microwaves, stovetops, oven, etc. Remind yourself that you probably don’t need the deluxe ice cream maker or the state-of-the-art margarita maker, but rather should direct that money towards the staples—we know, sometimes the truth hurts!

4. Window Treatments
Window treatments (i.e. drapes, shades, blinds) are one of the most important things in your home because you typically keep them for a long time, and you use them everyday. It’s important to invest in ones that won’t mold or collect dust easily which can cause respiratory problems to your family. Window treatments can also make or break a room! Too short or too long and you’ll run the risk of making the room look warped. We suggest looking into customizable, made-to-order drapes and shades, so you can find the perfect fit for your home.
5. Flooring
Flooring is one of the most important design elements—it literally covers every square inch of the home! Your choice in flooring is subtle but also noticeable, and you will likely keep it for over a decade. You should invest in high-quality wood or tile because you want me to make sure the color does not fade, the shade does not warp, and it stays looking pristine.

6. Kitchen Cabinetry
Cabinets are another thing that we use every day, but with these, we have to directly look at them every time we use them. Plus, they experience a lot of wear and tear with all the opening and closing. You want to choose high-quality, durable cabinets that will do their job and add to the appearance of your kitchen. For these, it may even be a good idea to hire a designer so they can give you expert advice that will make the investment worthwhile.
