How to start (re)decorating your home!

As with any project, we know that decorating your home can be overwhelming, and oftentimes, people just don't know where to begin! Well, luckily for you, we came up with a step-by-step guide to helping you start your redesign.

  1. Determine what you want to change.

We begin with this because it’s the impetus for your design project. You need to figure out what exactly you like or dislike about your room in order to fix it.

  1. Figure out what you like.

From home decor magazines to Instagram, there's a plethora of options available to help you get design inspiration. Create a Pinterest board with photos of rooms that you like. By doing this, it’ll help you narrow down what sort of aesthetic you should go for in the room.

  1. Set a budget.

How much are you willing to spend? This will help you determine what you should spend and scrimp. Typically, you would spend the most on investment pieces – ones that you don’t tend to switch out often. That’s why it’s important to purchase quality sofas, window treatments, and other large furnishings.

  1. Choose pieces to keep and replace.

While in an ideal world, we’d love to be able to change everything, sometimes this isn’t feasible. With investment pieces, like sofas or tables, rather than tossing them, you can try upcycle them. A new coat of paint or upholstery cover can add new life into a worn product.

  1. Plan out the room.

We know that not everyone has the luxury of working with an interior designer, or perhaps you just want to try decorating on your own. Take a photo of the space, draw it out, and decide where you want everything to go. Make precise measurements – you want your furniture to fit!

Don’t forget that there’s so many places to ask others for help! Houzz has a Design Dilemma board where the DIY’er can ask for assistance.

  1. Choose a color palette

Before you consider buying furniture, you should pick what colors you’d like in your room. What color will you pick for the walls? Do you want an accent color? Choosing a color palette ahead of time allows you to have a more cohesive room. For larger pieces, go for neutral colors – you want to pick timeless shades (so no patterns!) to match the décor in the room if you choose to change it up in the future.

  1. Start painting!

A fresh coat of paint immediately makes a dated home feel new again. If you feel like it’s a pity to purchase a new table, why not stain it a different color? Feel like your white chairs are boring? Dip the ends in your accent color paint.

  1. Shop!

Remember, you don’t need to finish a redecorating in a day! It’s a gradual process. Take time to make decisions, especially with more expensive items. Also, consider buying used! If a vintage chair has a nice framework, consider sprucing it up a bit with new fabric and a coat of paint.
