A Primer in Scandinavian Design

We love Scandinavian design, and according to our Instagram feed, it seems like many of you do too! Scandinavian design emphasizes simplicity, minimalism, and functionality, as well as the use of natural materials and textures.

Follow along on our Pinterest board as we examine some unique facets of Scandinavian design.

1. Wood & Natural Materials

From furniture to flooring, wood and other natural materials are common in Scandinavian design, which is why white, black, and brown are among the most prevalent colors in a Nordic home.

Floors are commonly made of light-colored wood or stone, or are painted white. Stray from carpet or overly dark tones for the floors, which dampen the preferred feeling of cleanliness and openness.

2. Graphic Art

Anyone who's stepped foot in an Ikea knows that the Scandinavians love minimalistic design. Graphic artwork stands out without looking cluttered, adding visual interest to rooms.

3. Faux Fur

While we aren't proponents of using real fur, Scandinavian design adores the use of the fur throws and rugs. Furs in neutral hues offer an interesting texture to the monochromatic rooms without seeming overwhelming, and give much needed warmth during the winter.

4. Lighting

Windows are so important in Nordic region (where the sun can shine for over 20 hours during the summer, and less than four in the winter.) Draperies offer much needed light control during the long summer days.

5. Accent Colors

Black and white does reign supreme, but accent colors are very popular as well. While cool colors are typical of Scandinavian design, bright, bold shades work too.
