As you probably know, we're kind of obsessed with window treatments. But we realize that many of you might not share our enthusiasm! With so many types of window shades available, we decided to talk about two popular types of shades, and where they differ.
Shades are among the most versatile form of window treatment. They are mounted either inside or on top of the window frame, where they are drawn up and down via a cord or spring mechanism to allow or inhibit light from coming in. Unlike blinds, they do not have slats, and are made of a continuous panel of fabric or a fabric-like material.
Roman Shades
Roman shades look great in any type of window, and work well for situations where draperies are not ideal. (For example, small windows, windows with a furniture against it, etc.) They are known for their understated elegance, which features a swath of fabric that can be raised or lowered depending on an individual's light control preference. When raised, the fabric stacks up into a neat horizontal row on the top of the window.
At Barn & Willow, you can choose from four different types of Roman shades depending on your home decor style: flat, pleated, cascade, and relaxed. Our Roman shades are all custom made to your window specifications. For more details about our hanging options, please visit this post: Your Guide to Roman Shades.
Roller Shades
Roller shades are exactly what they sound like. They consist of a rolling mechanism with a length of fabric attached to it. When fully raised, the material rolls up into the tube, and should not be visible. These are good for minimalistic looks because unlike Roman shades, the top part of the window is not covered.
